Hi Jeff<br>one of our sites with unity 2.4.0 , windows 2000. they were having a problem were when calls were diverting to unity on no reply or busy they were getting the mesage" i will record yor message after the tone" then there was no tone then unity would say the prompt again and again. when callers try to check their voicemail it tells them" it is temporarily not available to complete your call. I dialled into the site. there was only 6 mb left on C drive. i thought that this was causing the problem.I went to c:\winnt\ntds. I noticed about 600MB worth of files of the format edb00001.log. they were dated a few months old so i moved all the old ones to d:\ to free some space..the c:\drive has 600 mb free space now but still won't work properly. this is a stand alone unity not even on the LAN so no one goes near it. it just sits in a server room taking calls. i feel that a windows NT application is filling up the disk space with logs or something. I have done all the obvious like clearign internet history, searching for *.tmp files, cleaning the windowns Temp directories. defragged.any ideas on what this could be? also do you think rebooting the server would get unity to start working correctly again?<br><br>your help would be greatly appreciated<br><br>thanx<br><br>

Those EDB files were most likely Exchange transaction logs. Exchange gets REAL cranky when the partition you have it configured to use for transaction logs goes below 10 meg of space... here's an MSDN article on how to recover your system from that specific problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q259/7/51.ASP
And here's a related article on how to identify EDB files that can safely be removed from the system:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q240/1/45.ASP
Here's another article on how to recover space from logs which might also be of interest:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q128/3/25.asp
I'm guessing there are errors in the event log on the system that will probably be barking about the private store on the Exchange server not starting properly and the like. Once in that state I don't think Unity can recover on the fly, you'll need to reboot. But be sure to address your Hard drive space issues... I'd definitley run the Exchange optimizer and move stuff around if you've got room somehwere. Ideally you should have two partitions on two physical driver to handle the *.EDB database files and the EDB*.log transaction files seperately (i.e. so they each use their own SCSI channel for writing). If, however, you don't have enough room, I'd lump the performance hit and map them both to one big partition.

Not to butt in, but the .edb's int %systemroot%\ntds are Active Directory logs. This machine is a DC, and will likely get VERY cranky on a reboot. I'd back up the "System State" data with a AD-aware backup util, which would take care of the logs just as with Exchange...

hi the other guy is on the right path. i found a technet article. f you run the NTBACKUP.exe on a domain controller (article ID:Q272425. Active directory does not truncate Active directory logs during system state backup.)so this is a bug which is fixed in Service pack 2. though i understand Service pack 2 is not qualified for Unity 2.4.0 yet. i guess we should get a active directory aware backup software. does Cisco reccommend any specific backup software?
thanx for your help Jeff

The only backup package we've actually used and tested in house is BackupExec, however several sites are using other packages out there and I haven't heard of any specific problems with them.

one more question about the backup Exec software.does it automatically delete these active directory logs?
thanx

I'm not sure right off hand... you might check out the white papers on Veritas' site for BackupExec:
