Would like to be able to simply dial 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx. how would I do this?

you can do a couple of things here. The best way is to make a route list and include the route group you are using in it. on the route group properties page put a 9 in the "Prefix Digits (Outgoing Calls)". I use this for a number of things, you can use a 91 and they only have to dial 10 digits it is up to you.
