Does the AS5300 support SS7/C7 signaling protocol or do we have to set in a separte signaling controler to achieve this. Why would we need this.

I am not sure if you are using the As5300 as a VoIP gateway or a Dial-in platform, but you will need to use a separate signaling controller in both cases.
For Dial-in a SC2000
For Voice a VSC3000, or PGW2200.
These products are part of the Media Gateway Controller family.
A SLT is a 2600 router that translates an SS7 link to SS7 over IP.

Just to clarify:
1. The PGW2200 is renumbered from the VSC3000, and both are identical.
2. For voice, you can also use the SC2200 as well.

I'm not sure that you got your question answered but Yes the AS5300 does in fact support SS7/C7 signaling. We are currently using Cisco SS7 signaling controler which is called the SC2200 which talk to the AS5300 using ISDN.
If you would like a sample of our currently running configuration from a 5300 please feel free to contact me.
