I want to install a primary Unity and a failover. No big deal. So here is the hitch I want it to have off box message store. So to I just load the message store software disk on to the 7845i ECS I purchased for the message store or do I need a build it as a true Exchange enviroment. Keep in mind this is a Voice Mail only deployment. I have no issues building and I am very comfortable with Unity just have not done a off box message store.

In a failover system, the domain controller and message store (exchange 2000) is not installed on the same server as the unity servers.
When you build the unity servers, you will point to the offbox exchange server as the partner server.
You will still to need to install the exchange management tools on the unity servers so that the mapi files will be available to unity services.

Lets say the message store goes down the UMR will still store new messages even though the off box is out.

That is correct.
