view voicemail on the phone screen (7970)

How can I view voicemail on the 7970 phone screen, before I listen to voicemail?

Not sure what you mean by viewing voicemail before you listen to it ? There should be a visual indicator (yellow color flashing envelope) against the line that indicates you have voicemail.
