I was just wondering how many organizations out there are actively involved/engaged in SaaS offerings? I also hear now about PaaS (Platform as a Service). Is anyone out there also involved with this? What are your thoughts on either or both?

SaaS from Salesforce.com and many other companies in the Supply Chain automation area are in use. It is an emerging Model and sometimes also has Cloud as co-companion for those interested in "pay per use" model. Google Apps & several applications from Yahoo , IBM and even Mocrosoft have several offerings today.

Recent CIO magazine hightlights GE's use of Supply Chain SaaS product from Aravo Technology

In terms of PaaS , recently www.coghead.com has been acquired by SAP and is touted to SAP's own internal experiementation with Cloud.

We are currently considering a move from an existing email server in our environment to Google Apps for Education for several reasons. Besides the obvious removal of hardware maintenance, we also would remove the need for an existing spam filter device along with an expensive email archiving solution. With such a small IT dept., we have struggle to keep up with maintaining servers and services. Google Apps for Education would alleviate/minimize at least one demand on our staff. More importantly, we have seen an explosion in requests from teachers for collaboration tools. Therefore, we want to provide them with the ability for them to collaborate through Google Docs (word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations) and to extend that work model to students.
