Hello @Ibrahim Jamil

If you plan on using the Nexus switches as your gateway for the servers then YES, HSRP is needed. In fact, HSRP + VPC works better then without VPC, because in vPC scenario, regardless if the node is HSRP active or HSRP standby, both vPC peers are actively forwarding and routing the traffic.

Additional to enabling HSRP, there are few features related to vPC and routing:

  • "peer-gateway" - used to route traffic on behalf of the vpc peer (when DMAC of packet is the mac address of the vpc peer)
  • "layer3 peer-router" - used to enable routing over vPC.

If interested in routing over vPC, there is a list of supported typologies: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/ip-routing/118997-technote-nexus-00.html

Stay safe,

Sergiu

thanks bro balaji , the thread still open there pls when u have time look at it

Hi Ibrahim
Nexus like any other L3 multilayer SW or Router when we connect two through broadcast domain we need to config HSRP.
the Q is what is different between Nexus and other L3 SW HSRP?
the Answer is in normal HSRP the one peer work as active and other work as standby and the active one is forward traffic send to VIP of HSRP group
in Nexus HSRP the both peer work as active and hence and forward traffic send to VIP of HSRP group.
this make HSRP in Nexus Active/Active.

why we need HSRP simply we have two L3 and we need One default GW in PC so we use HSRP to generate one IP which is VIP of HSRP and this VIP will be the only default GW for all PC.
