10 GigE 802.3ae question

Is this standard backwards compatible with 1 GigE?

I am planning to implementa new core switch, and am considering getting the 10GigE ports. However, I do not have plans to upgrade the other core switches to 10GigE at this time.

My question is if the 10 GigE ports (say on a Cat4500) would be able to connect at 1 GigE with my other switches.

No.. This will not work. You need to have 10gig on either end for the link to come up.
