Have a new 2940 switch. setup basic config, assigned ip to vlan1. Vlan1 shows active with all ports assigned (default config). sh int - lists vlan1 up line protocol is down... All the interfaces are down line protocol down... Sorry, know this is probably simple but what am I missing?

Connect a device in VLAN 1 such as a PC or another switch. The layer 3 interface vlan 1 will be down due to auto-state until a layer 2 interface comes active.

I did connect it to a pc. The port will not light up. Have verified, its not lan cable. Reset switch to factory default and configured using web interface. Still shows vlan1 is uo line protocol is down? Not sure whats wrong? Cant access remotely, have to console due ports showing to be down? Really frustrated. Maybe a bad switch?

After resetting the switch to factory defaults, does the link LED come on on the PC port? If not, I would ask, in this order:

(1) Is there something wrong with the cable, crossed, etc.? How do you verify the cable is OK?

(2) Is there something wrong with the PC, e.g. NIC card dead, disabled , etc.

(3) Is there something wrong with the switch? Did it throw up any errors during booting?

Note, you will have to wait at least 30 seconds after connecting the PC, while the Spanning Tree finishes doing its stuff. Then you can test.

Perhaps you could post output from the boot sequence?

Just re-read your posting: "Reset switch to factory default and configured using web interface." How do you do this if you cannot access remotely?

Hi,

Will you please add the command "switchport mode trunk" to your switchports. This will put your port down and up shortly. Then wait about 30 seconds and see if your interface vlan goes up (provided you have at least one switchport connected).

Best regards,

Antonin
