3548XL GBIC WS-5484 connection problem

Hi,

I got two Cisco WS-C3548XL, each one have a GBIC 1000Base-SX tranceiver (WS-5484) and they are connected together with a fiber. It's work very well.

Both have IOS version 12.0 (5.3)WC(1)

Here my problem:

We have decided to change this topology and we are trying to connect the Cisco switches in a SMC Tigergiga 8624T switch via SFP GBIC Transceiver 1000Base-SX (SMBGSLCX1).

We are getting connectivity on TigerGiga but nothing on the 3548Xl switch. We have configured both switch with no negociation and no flowcontrol. Both Speed are set manually. Fiber link are good for sure !

What could be wrong?

(trying all setting possibilities?)

Is there any compatibility issues with SMC and Cisco transceivers ?

Thank

I would say it was a negotiation problem, but you said you have it turned off. My next guess would be incompatability.

The problem could also be the switch IOS image. What you're running is over three years old (18-July-2001). The Catalyst 3500XL series is up to 12.0(5)WC10 now (07-June-2004).

I had problems a couple years ago with a new Catalyst 3550-12G talking Gigabit to a 3Com switch over an SX GBIC connection. A software upgrade to a more current version and configuring "speed nonegotiate" on the Cisco's GBIC interface was the solution.

OK now i upgrade to IOS 12.0(5)WC10 and still not working.

Config:

speed full duplex

no flowcontrol

no negociation

Still no connection on the Cisco interface.

Do you think that flowcontrol is needed?

thank

Have you tried this:

(config-if)#switchport nonegotiation

This will turn off the DISL/DTP negotiation for forming the trunk between the link. Make sure the port is set to access.

regards,

Sorry but the command:

(config-if)#switchport nonegotiation

do not exist

Here what i have.

(config-if)#switchport ?

access Set access mode characteris

mode Set trunking mode of the in

multi Set characteristics when in

priority Set 802.1p priorities

trunk Set trunking characteristic

voice Voice appliance attributes

1000 Base SX requires negotiation! Turn it back on...

Also update your sofware, they have WC(9a) out now.

I already have WC(10),

Bytheway when negotiation is on its for negotiating what? (Flowcontrol or speed or duplex)

I also send my problem to SMC engineer maybe the problem is on there side.

Continue finding answer, i trying all your answer, keep the good work. Thank i appreciate !

Finally its now Working.

After talking with the guys at SMC:

I upgraded the firmware of the SMC Switch.

Here the congig:

SMC: Autonegotiation,1000f, FC, Sym

Cisco: Duplex auto, negotiation auto, flowcontrol

Thank you guys for your help!!
