When you "outside of the LAN the server is on" do you mean on a separate IP subnet, or separated by a WAN link?
Do you have a WINS server defined for the remote subnets? Are you blocking all NetBIOS broadcasts at your routers?

As a Network Administrator, in AD when you first enroll into the ADUC you have to be on the Domain network where the domain controller is. And if you enroll and don't sign in before leaving you must first sign in using the credentials of the user needing to login. The other way is you can install RAS and Routing to make a VPN out to the internet to connect to be able to ping the domain controller and log in successfully for the first time. Read this Article to follow the steps to installing it. Windows Server, RAS and Routing VPN installation.
I am here to help at any time
Thanks
