Are CST and PVST (or PVST+) compatable?

If I have a different vendor switch running Common Spantree or 802.1d, would it be compatable with my Cisco switch running PVST or PVST+

Thanks,

----Mike

Yes, it will be compatible.

The Common Spanning Tree will "connect" to your VLAN1 spanning tree.

See BPDU Formats part of http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/473/103.html#stp for details.

Just don't disable STP for your VLAN1 (strongly recommended anyway).

Milan

That would be for pvst+ as pvst is not compattible with cst.

the only thing you have to do is configuring the edge-switch of your cisco network connecting to the other vendor switch to pvst+. the pvst+ switch can communicate on the one side with your pvst-network and on the other side with the cst-network. this should work fine.
