Yes you can bridge within a VLAN. Sometimes people install a pair of remote bridges to transport non-routeable traffic over WAN connections instead of encapsulating and routing.
Yes,you can bridge between VLAN, but why would you? One objective of VLAN's is to control broadcast propogation. Bridging between VLAN's defeats this objective. Typically, VLANs have different network address, bridged traffic with different network addresses wouldn't communicate. Someone might think of this if they had a combination of routeable and non-routeable protocols.

i have a real world example im actually getting ready to try to do this
i need to bridge 5494 sna trafic to an as400 vlan
using the VLAN MACHINEs cat 6500's

Yes your vlan can span in multiple bridges or switches
But You can't bridge two VLans. As vlan creates the broadcast domains so you have to always use router or layer 3 device between two Vlans.
