With "show processes memory" the IOS shows the amount of memory.
How does the router derives this value ?
This value is smaller the amount of RAM. What happened to the rest ?
Can anyone please help me to explain this ?

remember 64Mb installed RAM does not mean all will be available. some of it allocated to based on devices installed, and I/O (see below url). for example if you have 2 fastethernet and 2 wic-t1 cards, the router will allocate resource to support them. there is a memory calcuator for 2600/3600 series you can play around with. but you get the idea.

But it doesn't explain why. The total amount of memory shown with "sh processes memory" is less than the total amount of RAM shown with show version.
I don't understand how this "total" value is derived.
For ex. in my situation I get 64MB of total RAM with "show version". But "show processes memory" shows 20MB of "total" hold memory, of which 18MB is used and 2MB is free.
I don't understand why the value 20MB and what happened to the rest of the 64MB.
