Can circuit speed be faster then s0 speed?

An ISP shipped a router and CSU/DSU which included the following configuaration for the s0 interface.

interface Serial0

description WAN

bandwidth 128

ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.252

ip nat outside

load-interval 30

Since this is supposed to be a 256K circuit I asked why the bandwidth setting on the serial interface is set to 128. The response was that it did not matter because the line speed was controlled by the router on the other side.

Sounds kind of fishy to me. Can I get my 256 using the config above? Does the ISPs explanation hold water?

TIA,

Diego

The response you got from your ISP is partially right. The clocking is not provided by the router at the other end but rather by the CSU/DSU (unless the routers are connected back to back). The bandwidth statement doesn't have any bearing on the speed the interface will run though. It is used at the control plane level (routing protocols) for metric calculation.

Hope this helps,
