Can I upgrade DRAM on a Cisco 831 router?

Below is the sh version for the 831 router that I have. It shows that I have 48 MB DRAM. Can I add 16MB or more of DRAM to this router?

I should have said "yes"

You can upgrade your router to 48 + 16

If you had 64 then you could upgrade to 80.

To clarify, a c831 router that ships with 32 MB of SDRAM (on the motherboard) can be upgraded to 48 MB SDRAM with a 16 MB SDRAM SODIMM.

That will let you run everything in 12.3(14)T or 12.4M except IPS and APP FW functionality. That will not be true for long...

Otherwise, if you have the NEWER c831-64 router that ships with 64 MB of SDRAM (on the motherboard) that has been available since April (the 48 MB SDRAM version is no longer sold), then you can upgrade it to 80 MB of SDRAM with the same 16 MB SDRAM SODIMM.

There is NO WAY to upgrade the older 32 MB SDRAM models to the 64 MD SDRAM model without a motherboard replacement.

In any case, don't buy any more c831 routers (even the newer 64 MB version), only purchase the 87x series routers. The c871 is the equivalent model with up to 256 MB of SDRAM and much better performance for the same price. In most cases the price is lower than the c831 because additional functionality is included with the c871 ADVANCED SECURITY (base) feature set. This includes full QoS and EIGRP stub. There is also an integrated wireless AP option, I could go on...
