Hi,
You can trunk VLANs to a 3600 series router.
This would enable you to route between your VLANs and give you the ability to apply some kind of layer 3 filtering.
The reason you might want to do this is if you didn't have a layer 3 capable switch yet wanted to deploy multiple VLANs on your switches for example VLAN 2 for users, and VLAN3 for servers. By trunking these VLANs to the router you could:
A) route between the VLANs
B) Apply some kind of filtering to give restricted access to certiain kinds of servers.
This kind on config is actually called "router on a stick"

Hi sk,
Routers such as the 3640 does not allow u to actually create virtual interfaces for intervlan routing. Instead, u would have to create sub-interfaces under the fastethernet interface, and with the right sets of commands configured on it, thus intervlan routing can be done between the sub-interfaces.
Interface Vlan "X", which is also known as SVIs (Switched Virtual Interfaces) can be created on switches, eq. 3550, 4500, 6500. For the purpose of intervlan routing, u would need at least a 3550 and above with the proper Enterprise IOS.
Hope it helps.
