Dear all,
I have a catalyst 6509 switch, with 2 720 sup-eng, when I boot the switch in the morning both the sup- engs come to the rommon mode, I need to allways boot then from the rommon mode after which the redundancy works fine between the sups- engs. Plese advice on how to get the normal boot operations.
Cheers

If there is no boot statement in the config but the IOS image is on the Sup 720, it will boot to RP ROMMON. If so type "boot" and it will load the image
Be sure that you have the correct boot statement in the config - something like :
boot system flash sup-bootflash:(filename)
If I remember rightly, if you only have 1 image in the sup-bootflash, you can omit the filename from the above statement

Sorry for not replying yet, but I didn't see anything wrong, so I was hoping that someone else would step in. But in the absence of other replies, I can at least walk it through with you.
OK, I can see that the config register is 0x2102, which is what I would expect. I don't think the 720 has anything strange about its config register settings. However, in trying to find out about this, I looked at the password recovery document:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/720bug_passwd_45681.html
This mentions an interesting bug that just might be related to your problem; the version numbers are close enough:
http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/Bugtool/onebug.pl?bugid=CSCec36997&Submit=Search
Compare with:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/pswdrec_6000IOS.html
You didn't recently change from CatOS to IOS did you? Because there are special procedures for that (which I haven't read, but here they are FWIW):
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/80.shtml
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/81.html
I can see that your system image file is the same as expected, and you were able to boot it manually from the rommon. You could check that the filename is the same in flash as it is in your boot command. Just for good measure, you could "no" the boot system command then put it back again. Not only will this ensure that there are no hidden characters somewhere, but it will also warn you if you have entered an image name that it will not find in flash.
That's it for now. I'll post again if I think of anything more. Let us know if you find anything.

pull out one engine, boot , change the boot setting, verify if it can boot correct.
the pull out it, change another engine, do it again.

Probably your SP config-register is not 0x2102. Issue a
W2S-5.6-6506#remote command switch show bootvar
BOOT variable =
CONFIG_FILE variable =
BOOTLDR variable =
Configuration register is 0x2100 <<----
If it is anything other than 0x2102, change it
W2S-5.6-6506#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
W2S-5.6-6506(config)#config-register 0x2102
W2S-5.6-6506(config)#end
W2S-5.6-6506#wr mem
Issue the "remote command switch show bootvar" to check if it says it will be 0x2102 at next reload and reboot the switch and see what happens.
Hope this helps.
