Cisco 831
12MB Flash Memory
32MB Dram Memory
I am not able to get to any command prompt but rommon mode because of the message I'm recieving during boot.. See below.
boot: cannot determine first file name on device "flash:"
So I am attempting to push a new image via xmodem -r.
However the image size is 5.80MB and do believe my flash mem is full. See files names and sizes listed in flash below.
rommon 1 > dir flash:
File size Checksum File name
4895 bytes (0x131f) 0x71f7 webflash (deleted)
986 bytes (0x3da) 0x5eab webflash (deleted)
941455 bytes (0xe5d8f) 0xc85c webflash (deleted)
278042 bytes (0x43e1a) 0x8546 webflash (deleted)
62561 bytes (0xf461) 0x55fb webflash (deleted)
474217 bytes (0x73c69) 0x1533 webflash (deleted)
47026 bytes (0xb7b2) 0x1b3f webflash (deleted)
210 bytes (0xd2) 0x0c31 webflash (deleted)
8082 bytes (0x1f92) 0x97c6 webflash (deleted)
3463 bytes (0xd87) 0x0d3d webflash
I would like to delete these files, and then I load the new image via xmodem -r
Please advise,
James

Hello James,
when you do an:
xmodem -?
do you get the -f option ? If so, use this option to perform a full erase of flash in combination with the xmodem download procedure.
Regards,
GP

Hi there, i have just seen a post you left back in March regarding a 831 router booting problems. I have the same problem with a Cisco 837, with the same error you get where it can not determine the first file name on device Flash:.
I am wondering if you can help me as i do not have a clue what to do next, our company purchased 10 of these with no Smart Net contract as they did not know which one to purchase... I have other router 837 routers but can not get access to download the IOS images....
Can you help..
