One of my clients has a 1710 that is connected to a cable modem. The 1710 acquires the IP via DHCP, and it does this with no problem. The problem is, the 'ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Ethernet0' does not actually route traffic through Ethernet0, I have to replace Ethernet0 with the IP of the router on the other side. Unfortunately, every now and then, the router actually does change, and then I have to go in and change the router IP again. Anyway to actually make the Ethernet0 work in the 'route' statement?

Hi,
can you explain your description again. Want you sent traffic to your lan or to you wan site withe the default route?

I believe that E0 is the WAN interface, Fast0 would be the LAN.
Have you tried not to assign a default route?
The router should receive it along with the IP address and subnetmask, from the ISP's DHCP server.
