Difference in Stackwise & VSS?

As far as i know both technologies makes physical switch into a single logical one. Does anyone know what is the exact difference in both technologies? i appreciate your help. Thanks

The amount of appliance to form a logical switch. 

VSS = Maximum two chassis.  Only for 4500 & 6500/6800 switches.

Stack = Maximum nine appliances.  2960S/X/XR, 3750, 3650, 3850.

Thanks for the reply. Is there any method like one of the control plane will be active and all the data plane is in forwarding state in stacking technology?
