We have just had a router with an e1 interface, does this act the same as a serial interface, I.e like with serial could we connect 2 e1's together both on different ip addresses and they will still work ? is there any special setup with e1 ?

Do you mean the serial E1 or a channelized E1 ? If is serial E1, then just like usual serial config.; if it is channelized E1, you require to config. the channel-group, clock, frame and need to match w/ your provider.
Can you advise more detail what you had ?
Hope this helps.
