Ethernet is up but line protocol is down! Why????

Hello,

Today I had first experience with cisco IOS in a 2500 router so I am definately a newbie. The problem I have is that after setting an ip address for an ethernet interface, typing the command "no shutdown" and pressing ^z, then only the "Ethernet is up" while the "line protocol is down". What can be wrong? Could it be the ethernet slot in the room itself? the ethernet cable? Am I forgetting something?

Hello,

the status of the Ethernet interface is up/down when there is nothing connected to the port, or when, whatever is connected to the port, is not working correctly or is turned off. What do you have connected to your Ethernet port ? Keep in mind the following:

--> for a router to switch connection, you need a straight thru cable

--> for a router to router connection, you need a crossover cable

--> for a workstation to router connection, you need a crossover cable

So, most likely you are using the wrong, or a faulty, cable.

Regards,

Georg
