flash memory

I've recently upgraded the IOS on a 1712VPN/K9 router and deleted the old IOS.

Unfortunately the new IOS won't boot despite a successful upload. Thus a use 'bootlash' from rommon to get the IOS to boot up.

Show flash: yields-

1 c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.123-7.T1.bin (deleted)

2 sdmconfig-1711-1712.cfg

3 sdm.shtml

4 sdm.tar

5 home.html

6 home.tar

7 c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.123-8.T3.bin

I get an error saying 'problem loading 'sdmconfig-1711-1712.cfg' - the 1st entry in the directory.

The Router is configured with 'boot system flash c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.123-8.T3.bin'

Do I need to move entry 7 in the directory to position 1; if so how; or do I delete entries 2-6 as we don't use these files anyway.

regards

You should not need to move the entry from 7 to 1, unless you want to boot the router without using a boot system command.

With no boot system command the router will default to booting the first image it finds in flash. With a boot system it should find the image you name no matter what its position.

Do be careful that the name you have in the boot system command is exactly the same as the file name in flash. I have been bitten by small differences that create big problems (case sensitivity, make sure hyphens really are hyphens, periods really are periods, etc).

Can you be more specific about the error when you attempt to boot the new image. I recently attempted to update the IOS in a 1720 which had been running 12.3(4)T1 to 12.3(8)T and got an error message that it did not have sufficient memory to load the new image.

try to put a colon between flash and the image name

'boot system flash:c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.123-8.T3.bin'

Thanks Rick,

The boot system flash command is correct, thus I assume its being ignored for some reason - bug perhaps. Anyway I deleted items 2-6 inclusive and performed a 'squeeze' on flash. I'm thus left with just the new ios in the directory. I removed the 'boot system flash' command and having no further problems.
