We're using ftp to check the bandwidth of a 512K WAN link at different times of the day. We do a put and get of the same file. We have noticed that sometimes during the day, the speed of putting a file varies but getting is always very consistent. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be happening and what to monitor? Thx.

Are you pushing and pulling to the same host each time.
Its more than likely your FTP server having to do more processing when you are putting a file as it has to write it to disk, perhaps check the IO utilisation of the server at the same time.
You could also use MRTG stats which is a freeware program that monitors the number of octets in and octets out on your router using SNMP. It then plots these values to a graph so you can get an idea of how much utilisation your have on your link over a period of your choice. The default is 5 mins.

Yes, it is the same set of servers. Basically using a cron job to do the ftp. Will do a check on the server utilisation.
Thx!
