HSRP Sync Delay

Hi, folks:

I found out yesterday that there is a new command introduced in 12.2 load.

standby group# preempt delay sync delay-in-sec

My question is, how we can interpret this sync delay value? Does it mean, the local HSRP instance will not become ACTIVE until one of the following situations is met?

1. Local router communicates with its peer and successfully negotiates the HSRP role before Sync Delay timer expires.

2. If local router cannot communicate with its peer within Sync Delay time, it becomes ACTIVE.

Thanks!

The sync delay is the maximum time (in seconds) a group will wait to synchronize with the IP redundancy clients.

Preemption may be delayed for a minimum number of seconds with the minimum delay extension. This is desirable as it allows routing tables etc. to be updated before a router becomes Active.

The sync knob specifies the MAXIMUM time allowed before preemption may occur. Also, think of delay as the MINIMUM time that must pass before preemption may occur. Configuring sync of 120 specifies, once 120 seconds expires preemption will attempt.
