Can anyone tell me why my router had a dhcp address on it when I booted it up, what would be the point of this ?

Probably you have "ip address dhcp" configured under the interface.

That was there, but what point is there in having a dhcp address on your ethernet interface ?

Well the point is, some customers prefer to get an ip address for the ethernet interfaces and hence IOS has this feature.

I used to have "ip address dhcp" configured on my interface because it was connected to a broadband cable modem connection and at that time i didn't have a static IP address.
