Latency, leading to Packet Loss

hi,

I have a lab network which I test pre-production designs on.Im generating 100MB of traffic(web, ftp, smtp, snmp) across a MSTP region of 4 Cisco 3550-12G which two internet facing routers interconnect.

pinging between each router GigE interface I get sporadic packet loss. The pings slow down and then tail of to a stop before speeding up again. If I replace the Cisco 3550s with Extreme switches I get zero packet loss

The routers are also Cisco and all interfaces are Gigabit with cisco GBICs, no negotiation and no errors on input or output

These thing have a backplane of 12gbps and are meant to be able to switch standard 64byte packets at 17mpps

Im trying to understand why the detoriation in latency between the two!

the cpu never goes above 9% and there are no debugging explanations that help. Im going to put a sniffer on this to try and see whether its the requests or replys that are failing, but just wondered if anyone had similar experiences

Cheers
