Sounds like the cam table has timed out. Unless a packet is sent from the devices, the cam table won't be populated. Any chance you can call and have the cables traced, identify the machine/IP and then ping it? The mac address should show up in your cam table immediately following. Also, you may want to check to see if the duplex settings on both sides are the same. This can keep the connection up on the switch, but down on devices.
