I know that there is a limit of 16 HSRP groups per router (or upto 256 with the right hardware), but is there a limit on the number of HSRP groups on a single interface? Can all 16 HSRP groups exist on the same interface, using secondary IP addresses? I know it's a very unusual situation, but it's the one we have run into. Any knowledge, or better yet, experience on thsi would be a huge help.

Theoretically, you should be able to configure 255 groups per interface, except for certain hardware limitations as you mentioned, per PFC2 in Catalyst 6500.
I am not certain, but again this may depend on the interface controller and number of mac address filters that can be applied.

thanks for the reply....probably not good practice to configure multiple secondary IPs each with it's own standby group...but this is a temporary solution for migration purposes
