Hi all, Can anyone tell me why we would use no ip address on the serial port on my router, generally I use ip unnumbered ?

hi
One possible reason is that particular serial interface would hve been configured as a member for a multilink bundle in which you dont need to configure an ip address for the serial interface.
Second well known reason would be the serial interface may not be functional or not in use..

So in any other cases would it not work if no kind of ip or ip unnumbered was assigned to ot ?

Yes it will not work.Router will not able to route/receive the traffic without an IP on the serial interface in any othercase than the one listed by Edwin in his post.
