Number of broadcasts on a switch port

Can anybody help me to find out what an acceptable number of broadcasts is on a switch port in a class c vlan? We had an issue when a device on a switch port was broadcasting continuously which caused the vlan to slow down to the extent that it was not possible to work any more. I have set the broadcast limit to 5% on all the ports, but is this realistic or not? What is the 'recommended' broadcast limit?

Etherpeek default broadcast alarm is 5/s for a sustained 10 seconds.
