I have an old 2501 router that I want to put back in service.
When I do a sh ver the Configuration register is 0x42
When I try to set the Configuration register to 0x2102 it just resets the router.

WHen you enter the command, the router just reloads?
Is this happening continuously ?
Can you paste outputs of
1. sh version
2. sh stacks

Are the above outputs taken from the router, after the reload or was it from a backed up file, you had taken before ?
The stack and sh version outputs look clean, except that the config register is 0x42.
Try reseting the router once, and hit the Break or Ctrl+Break keys, to break the router into ROMMON mode.
rommon1>o/r 0x2102 - sets the register settings
rommon1>i - initializes the IOS.
See if this works, and puts the router back to normal register settings.
