On a switch running PVST and a bridging loop occurs within one vlan will the use of configuring max-free buffers per interface limit the deplition of resources and allow other vlan traffic to continue as normal?

are you talking about the buffer
If you want to prevent the depletion of resources due to a broadcast/multicast storm when a bridging loop occurs, look at configuring broadcast/multicast storm control ( suppression ).

We have experienced this message on a catalyst 3550 48 port SMI switch:

no routing process configured on switch. I/O pool I think is used for packet memory ('pool I/O'). does this mean its possible to tune these buffers on this type of switch as it appears to be using the pool.
the command also exists on the switch, possibly because its running IOS.
any further ideas.

I use a c3500xl witch allso supports buffer tuning. but i do think what you are asking is not possible since the buffering is done as the frame comes in and has yet to be inspected for tags. so at this level there is no vlan awareness.
