I have been tasked with using QOS to limit the amount of bandwidth our network backups can use in our LAN. We have some applications that use real time data and the backups have been disrupting the timely delivery of the data.
Is there an easy way to implement QOS to fix this, and is there a configuration of QOS on the Cisco routers that does not require QOS on the application side?
QOS is a new beast to me and any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

It means that you want to classify applications that use real-time data with a higher priority, while you must still guarantee a good network bihavior for the other services, for example, data backups?
The answer is: you can do it easily by using QoS features available on Cisco IOS.
More infor: QoS on Cisco IOS doesn't require you enable any additional QoS feature on Application site.
You should go cisco technical support site for detail about how to deploy QoS,
Hope this help!

I believe Committed Access Rate (CAR) will provide the solution you need.
