Solved: RIP Invalid Timer

Hi:

Books say RIP invalid timer is 90 seconds by default. However in http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1835/products_command_reference_chapter09186a00800917e4.html#1018019 (timers basic command) says 180 seconds (equal to holddown timer).

Please explain why this difference.

Which book?

So.... There are two timers in view here. The first is the amount of time after which not hearing about a route RIP will consider the router invalid. This is 90 seconds, by default, three updates. The second is what's called the holddown timer, which is the amount of time RIP will hang on to a route, and ignore any learned routes to the same destination with the same or worse metric.

The documentation you point to looks wrong, so I'll open a defect against it.
