It appears you are running into the following bug
http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/bugtool/onebug.pl?bugid=CSCee41831
This bug is still being worked on. As a workaround, back up your config, issue "wr erase" command on router and reload it afterwards.
The router should come up with no config, apply the config which you saved and you should be able to issue a wr mem.
Hope this helps

Thank you for your help prkrishn
However I've already tried that and im in the midst of doing it again. I have a backup of the IOS from a long time ago that I keep uploading through xmodem and it still seems to make the same error.
Anythoughts as to how I can get another IOS without being a registered member?
thanks again for your help

can this problem also be linked with the ROMMON?
so if I do indeed get another IOS the same problem will continue.
