Router DHCP server and Option 78 (slp)

Hi all!

I'm having problems handing out option 78, Novell SLP out from a Cisco 831 router.

Anyone have experience with this?

I've configured the DHCP server with OPTION 78 IP <IP ADDRES>

Does this has to do with some sort of inform request that the Router doesnt do?

Further more, that multicasts option needed for this are also configured.

Kind regards

Kelvin Dam

Hi Kelvin,

first i say you that i don't have experience have with option 78. But why you thin that it not works. Perhaps you can sniffer the connection pre and after the router. The router should only forward the packets.

When the router don't this, you can open a tac case and ask for assistence.

Sorry that i don't have a better answer for you.

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter,

I have done a packet sniffing, and I can see the other options, IP, Gateway, DNS, Netbios etc. but NO option 78.

I think it has something to do with the DHCPINFORM packet...any ideas?

Kind regards

Sorry Kelvin,

a good solution i don't have. Perhaps you can try this link: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk361/technologies_tech_note09186a00800f0804.shtml

And when you have the possibility to open a case, a bug is allways possible ;-))

Peter

Hi,

Probably this won't help the originator of this request, but maybe anyone that runs into this from now on.

I ran into this problem when installing Siemens WLC Scalance equipment which uses SLP to send the WLC IP address to the remote APs.

Via wireshark it became apparent that configuring option 78 ip gave a fault message. It turns out it's expecting the format in hexadecimal, and even more specific (maybe only in this case) with a leading 01 value.

For me it turned out to be:

Option 78 hex 01ac1907fa

Ac1907fa representing 172.25.7.250

Hope this might help somebody in the future with this issue!

A very late reply however we do the same thing at some of our smaller sites - the option 78 is configured with HEX -

Novell's TID explains it must begin with 0680.0a if setting one DA :

Hope this helps someone in future
