Hi
I am in the process of impletenting 750 Cisco Access Points acros the business. I need to make a note of the serial numbers and Mac addresses for our inventory before I get these configured and sent out to their relavent destinations.
The AP's have have arrived in boxes of 10 (75 boxes). The sticker on the box with the barcode is either covered with a postage sticker, ripped, or my scanner will not scan it becaise it is too small. There is a sticker with the serial bundle which is larger and therefore scanable. Is there a way that I can scan this and get the MAC address and serial number.
I know that this is not a technical question but I don't want too spend the next 3 weeks opening 75 boxes and removing each AP individully and recording it.
Thanks for your assistance.

Get a barcode scanner.
It's more accurate and a helluva faster than recording the details by hand.

Hello, you could always plug all of them in to a PoE switch and do a show mac address-table. With regards to serial numbers, if I remember correctly they appear when you click on the AP on the WLC WebUI. In fact you could get both sets of information from there. What if there was some kind of report you could pull from the WLC. That would save you a lot of time.
That's if you have a WLC and if it can generating a report of some sort :-)

Depending on who you ordered through (third party or direct), they usually include an invoice form that contains all the items and serial numbers (at least the third party guys we go through). Can you get ahold of your shipping/receiving to see if they have the invoice still?

It would be much better if you purchase BARCODE reader. It will provide more accurate data.

We're wondering the same thing. Would a bar code scanner work? The data would have to be displayed on a PC or something where it could be recorded.

Yes and no.
We have a small Bluetooth barcode scanner. Works well if the bar codes were printed better. I mean, the bar codes for switches/routers are "readable" but for wireless access points, you would need several attempts to get it to read.
Alternatively, you can read the bar codes from the box. I only use this as a "last resort" because I have seen, in two occasions, that the codes in the box and the the ones from the appliance don't match.
