SNMP for Cisco2900

Hi all,

First i'm french, so excuse me for my poor english!

I am looking for the MIBS supported by Cisco2900 (not Cisco2900XL just Cisco2900).

this page http://www.cisco.com/public/sw-center/netmgmt/cmtk/mibs.shtml can't help me. When I choose Cisco2900 on this site, I have "the Catalyst 5000 MIB Support List"...

I'm looking in particular for oids which enable me to find VLan on each port and Duplex Mode/Status.

I hope you can help me!!

Best regards

Khay Huynh

Khay,

The first line "The lists below indicate which MIBs and SNMP traps are supported by the Catalyst 5000 series of switches (WS-C5000, WS-C5002, WS-C5500, WS-C5505, WS-C5509, WS-C2900, WS-C2926, WS-C5509E). " indicates these are the correct mibs for the 2900.

Many cisco devices share the same basic mibs.

Hi Khay

You're English seems fine to me !

It's strange that the 'MIBs Supported by Product' link which you have seen, lists MIBs for the Catalyst 5000. The 2900 is also listed, but now I'm not too sure whether the list applies to 2900's or not ...

With respect to the MIBs for Vlan information, please see the following link:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/tech/tk648/tk362/technologies_configuration_example09186a008015773e.shtml

For port duplex, see:

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/Mibbrowser/unity.pl?f=Translate&t=no&o=1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.31

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/Mibbrowser/unity.pl?f=Translate&t=no&o=1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.32

Hope this helps

I have found my mistake. In fact, i have to choose "Catalyst2900XL LRE" and not "Catalyst2900" or "Catalyst2900 XL".

So my switch works witch 'Cisco-C2900.mib' for example.

But there is still a problem. I can't have information about port duplex!

I use these two oid .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.31 & 32 which are in the 'Cisco-C2900.mib' which is supported by my switch. However it doesn't work... it's quite strange because other oids in this MIB work for example port status (blocking, forwarding...) : .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.22

Has anybody an idea about that?

Best regards,

Khay

What happens when you try to run an SNMPWALK on these objects - What response/error do you see ?

Also, are you using a MIB browser to WALK the MIB or a command line tool ?

I'm using a classical mib browser (a freeware). I load the Cisco C2900 MIB with this soft and then I try to run a snmpwalk on these two objects : .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.31 & 32 (duplex mode and status) but the soft doesn't give answers (no answer as if the switch doesn't recognize these OIDS)

But when I try to run SNMPWALK on other objects such as portstatus, I have an answer... I don't think that there is a problem with the soft I use.

That's strange - is it an old version of code which maybe does not support these objects? Alternatively, maybe a bug ...

When I am looking for MIBs, I do an SNMPWALK on the target device and make a note of the OID for the part of the MIB that I am interested in. I then go to WWW.MIBDEPOT.COM and paste the OID into the search bar.

In your case, paste .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.31 into the search bar and hopefully you will get the MIB that you want. If it returns a message saying the MIB cannot be found, try removing the .31 and search again. Keep removing the last number and searching again (so remove the .1 then search, remove the next .1 and search again) and so on.

I know it is a slightly laborious technique, but I usually find the MIB that I am looking for using this method, although occasionally it doesn't work.

Good luck,

Pete

Also, another point worth mentioning is that the Cisco C2900 MIB is supported in the following images:

c2950-c3h2s-mz.12.0-5.WC2

c2950-c3h2s-mz.12.0-5.WC2b

c2950-i6k2l2q4-mz.12.1-14.AZ

c2950-i6q4l2-mz.12.1-14.AZ

What is the name of the image (version and feature set) runnning on the switch ?

Hi,

Yes I already know www.Mibdepot.com and this website is very useful.

But I still have a problem : I'm sure that .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.31 & 32 are the correct OIDs for duplex state and status for CiscoC2900. However, I have no information when I try to get this OIDS... and no matter the mib browser I use. I even try with a little program in Perl I wrote but it doesn't work...

I have just browsed the MIB on one of our c2900's and I can confirm that .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.31 & 32 are the correct OIDs for duplex state and status for CiscoC2900.

I used GetIf (freeware downloadable from

http://www.wtcs.org/snmp4tpc/getif.htm), with the ciscoC2900MIB complied into it and I can snmpwalk that part of the MIB table OK. It gives me the duplex state and status for all interfaces.

When you say you have no information, do you mean that nothing is returned from the switch when you snmpwalk the MIB? Or do you mean that there is no description for the values that you get?

Pete

Nothing is returned from the switch when I snmpwalk this part of the MIB (.1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.31 & 32 )...

I will download GetIf and try with it. maybe it will work.

Khay

Even with GetIf, it still doesn't work... Maybe there is a bug with the management system of my switch...

I guess it could be a bug, but perhaps it is the IOS version? The c2900 that I tested this on is running:-

Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software

IOS (tm) C2900XL Software (C2900XL-C3H2S-M), Version 12.0(5)WC8, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Copyright (c) 1986-2003 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Compiled Thu 19-Jun-03 13:09 by antonino

Other than that, I am struggling for any more ideas.

Pete

My switch is :

Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software

IOS (tm) C2900XL Software (C2900XL-H-M), Version 11.2(8)SA1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Copyright (c) 1986-1998 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Compiled Tue 03-Feb-98 14:59 by rheaton

It's older than your switch but on this page, ftp://ftp.cisco.com/pub/mibs/supportlists/c2900xl-lre/wsc2900xl-lre-supportlist.html, I see that Cisco2900.mib is supported by my version (IOS release 11.2(8)SA1).

The most surprising is that I can get some information on some part of CIsco2900.mib but not what I'm looking for...

Thanks you all for your help, but it seems that I won't solve my problem. I will try, but later, to take an other switch 2900 in order to retry.

Khay
