Straight through cable between two PCs

I used to believe that to connect two PCs we have to use crossover cable (since they are similar devices).

Today 9-05-2006 I figured out that the straight through cable is working as well.

Any clarification about this ?

I assigned ip address of type 192.168.5.1/24 and 192.168.5.5/24.

And I tried also ip 200.x.100.30/24 and 200.x.100.31/24

Hi Zillah,

Does you NIC cards in pc are special nic cards which support auto mdix?

Using a crossover cable is the way to do it, unless your NIC's have the ability to use Auto-MDIX.

Some new cards do I think..

About your second thing with the IP addresses, what are you trying to do?

They are in range so if you are trying to ping from one computer to the other with these addresses it should work, unless you have a firewall on your computers that blocks ICMP. (like the XP SP2 built-in)

Hi,

Just to add to the above posts, I think you NIC cards have advanced drivers on them with some advance features like auto-MDIX (media dependent interface exchange ). That's why it worked.
