Supervisor 2 memory upgrade

Can anyone tell me if upgrading a Sup 2 from 128Mb memory to 256Mb is a complete 256Mb module or is there a slot to add an additional 128Mb card ? In either case are the MEM-MSFC2-256MB= and MEM-MSFC2-128MB= the modules to use.

Thanks, Stephen.

Stephen,

The memory upgrade for a Sup2 on the Cat6500's is a single 256MB module. The part number for this is MEM-S2-256MB=. You can find more information regarding the upgrade procedure at:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat6000/cfgnotes/78_12693.htm

Steve

What confuses me here is that there is a Sup2 memory upgrade and an msfc2 upgrade both for 256Mb. When Software Center says a native IOS version for the Cat 6500 needs 256Mb memory which one is it referring to ?

Thanks again, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

When you see on softwar center 256 MB memory its talking for your MSFC. Now remember though the IOS is saved on bootflasg of supervisor but config of IOS is saved in NVRAM for MSFC.

BUT in Native IOS not only DRAM for MSFC is used but for switch and layer 2 operation DRAM of supervisor is also utilized so we can say both the DRAM work together (msfc + supervisor) but if you need 256 MB DRAM for MSFC for a particular code supervisor memory need not be upgraded as software center is talking for DRAM of msfc.

Stephen,

Check the 12.2 SX release notes.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat6000/122sx/ol_4164.htm

It looks like 12.2SX wants 256 for both the MSFC and the Sup. Also, 32M of bootflash may not be sufficient. You may have to use the 64M PCMCIA card.

Tom

Thanks Tom,

I also found that over the weekend after going through the release notes. I had provisioned for a 64Mb PCMCIA card but ROMMON needs to be at 7.1(1) for this so it's another thing to get sorted.

Cheers, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

Correct...!!

Some Supervisor Engine 2 Release 12.2SX images are larger than the bootflash device. Supervisor Engine 2 ROMMON version 7.1(1) or later supports the MEM-C6K-ATA-1-64M= (64 MB) PCMCIA ATA FlashDisk device. Refer to this publication:

Ankur
