Re: Supervisor Upgrade

I have a Cat 6506 with a Sup 1. I want to upgrade to a Sup 720. Sup 1 is currently in Slot 1. According to the documenation I read, the Sup 720 will need to go in Slot 5 or 6. I plan on 6 since it is empty.

The switch is running in native IOS. The new Sup will be running native IOS as well.

Does anyone know of a document that details the steps I need to take? I am mostly concerned about not losing the VLAN and other configuration settings.

first off, get a backup of your entire config; switching, MSFC, all of it!!!

a good text file with all the configuration information should be acceptable.

second, you will probably have to reconfigure the entire Supervisor as this is not compatible with the SUP1A currently installed. the SUP1A will not be able to synchronize software to the new 720.

Hi,

As per your query you want to move from Sup1 to Sup720. It's good that you have Slot6 empty that we can use to put the supervisor 720, but there is more to it. You will need some more hardware upgrades to support the Sup 720, like replacing the fan tray with a High Speed Fan tray, and Using atleast 2300Watt power supplies with an input of 16amps.

As far as the configuratio files goes, you can take a backup of the configs from both the Sup and the MSFC. You can use a major chunk of the MSFC directly on the Sup 720 but in the native mode you will need to change the CatOS configs into IOS. Please see the following link to convert the CatOS configs into IOS so that you need not do the entire configurations again. Please be aware that this tool will not completely convert the configurations and so some commands will need to be looked up manually. :)
