Switch clusters and HSRP

Can the standby command switch ports be used as though they are ports on the other switches or are they of no use until it takes over as command switch. Also can I run HSRP between two 3550s that are not part of the cluster to provide two egress paths?

Yes, standby switch ports can be used if they are not the command switch. There function within the cluster has nothing really to do with switching functions. It's just for management. Also you can run HSRP between switches not in a cluster.
