tftp transfer rate

Hello,

I'm transfering files from routers and switches to a tftp server in a workstation.

Then, I would like to know if there's any limit about the rate to transfers from the router itself or it can transmit at the same rate than the workstation attached to it.

The limits on rate will not be because of the router. If the router and the workstation have the same kind of interfaces then the router can transmit at the same rate as the workstation. On the other hand if the workstation has a 100 MB interface and the router is transmitting over a T1 then obviously the router can not transmit quite as fast as the workstation.

The reality is that the limit on transmission is probably more dependent on the capabilities of the media in between the two devices than it is on the devices themselves.

And the greatest limit on transmission rate is the tftp protocol itself. tftp transmits a packet and waits for a response before it transmits the next packet. So the round trip time between devices will be the greatest impact on transmission rate.

also remember the difference in measuring bytes (data transferred) vs bits (capacity of interface is usually in bits per sec).

also remember my comment that the major limit on transfer rate is the round trip time between the two devices.

It is quite possible that what you are seeing would be considered a normal rate.

Oops, I'm sorry, I've make a mistake. 300,000 bits/sec. I'm talking about a 300 kbps over a 100 Mbps line.

TFTP on Cisco routers has always been slow in my experience. I've always assumed it has to due with the speed at which the router can read from or write to the Flash, but that's just a guess.

I'd never paid attention to the rate when I copied files between routers or switches flashes and yesterday I noticed that these transfers are very slow.

I'm not sure why it's the reason, but the rest of transfers are much faster. So, I would like to know why it occurs.
