traceroute x.x.x.x

Tracing route

Please can you explain the above especially the !A * !A.

We do not have an access list at our end.

Thanks

You may not have it at your end, but does the other end have it? Is that a traceroute from someone else to you?

A means administratively prohibited(ACL or the like).

The !A response is an indicator that you received a response of "administratively prohibited". I have never seen anything generate this response except an access list issue.

If there are multiple paths toward the destination somewhere along the data path it could possibly be the explanation for intermittent success and failure, if some packets on the path are hitting the access list and some are not.

I think that we would need more information about the topology of the network to get much better answers for you.

Thanks for your reply.

They do have an access list but they said the access list lets everything through so there is no way it can be an access list problem.

The traceroute is from me to their end.

Question: If it is an access list problem, can that account for intermittent dropped packets.

When I do a ping from my router, I get intermittent 80%, 40%, 100% pings.

Thanks

Thank you very much.

From all your explanation, I now understand the !A. The intermittent ping we were geting has been sorted out by the the Line Provider.

Thanks for all your help.
