Trunk port was reset after changing Etherchannel mode

I have etherchannel configured on dot1q (desirable)trunk on the switch. When I change the etherchannel mode from "on" to "desirable" on one side of the trunk, the port was reset.

Is there any workaround to avoid this port reset and the etherchannel mode is also changed.

When you change the signalling between ports, in this case from on to des. The port will by design try to reinitiate signalling with the distant end. So, there is a great possibility that it will reset every time you cahnge it.
