Hi,

Is there a way to upgrade 3750 SMI to EMI?

Are they different at hardware level, is this a sort of key upgrade, or is this just the IOS version which is different?

Thank you for your help.

Marc.

Hi,

I believe you can just upgrade the switch from SMI to EMI as per normal practice.

You do need to purchase the licenses agreement tho' from Cisco.

There is an upgrade kit. "Flexibility to upgrade to EMI after the initial deployment is provided through an EMI upgrade kit." from this doc:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5023/products_qanda_item09186a00801b0971.shtml

I guess the upgrade kit might have software and maybe a memory upgrade or something, but I don't have any details. you'll find the part numbers in the document according to which model you are starting from.

Hope this helps.

If you're refering to the original 3750 series, technically all you need to do is install the IP Services IOS and you've upgraded the device.  Legally, you need to acquire a "paper" license to use the advanced IOS feature set.

If you're refering the the 3750-X series, you need to install the "universal" IOS code and you also need to upgrade a license key on the device too.
