upgrading 5505 switch

does anyone have experience of upgrading the CATOS on these switches. I'm trying to upgrade from version 5.2(4) to 5.5(20). When ever I attempt to tftp the new OSI get a file does not exist message.

switch(enable) download 10.233.61.76 cat5000-sup3.5-5-20

TFTP Error: File does not exist.

TFTP connection fail(0).

tftp server

tftp error from x.x.x.x requesting cat5000-sup3.5-5-20: file does not exist

The file does exist, and I've been using the tftp server all day so I know it works. I've also tried adding .bin to the end, tried using another tftp server, checked the tftp server will transmit and receive, downloaded the file a seconf time, changed the tftp root folder. I can't think of anything else to try. I've even tried serialing the file across and that dosen't seem to work. Is it a case that the current is so old it needs additional commands to make this work?

The Cisco documentation is striaght forward but it dosen't seem to work.

Any suggestions from those of you who have upgraded these switches before would be welcome.

Thanks in anticipation

If you have a valid tftp server setup with the correct permissions for the file you want to download do the following on the switch. Do a copy tftp bootflash: hit the enter key , it will ask you for the address of the tftp server ,enter this hit the enter key , then it will ask you for the file name of catos bin image , enter that exactly as it shows on the tftp server , all syntax must be exact . Hit enter , it will ask if you are sure you want to download just say yes . You should make sure you have enough space in bootflash for the new image , if not your are going to have to delete current and squeeze the current image , if you have a flash card in slot0: of course you can put it there instead . This should download the file into bootflash. Once it is downloaded , modify your boot statement to point to your new image . All catos images should be .bin files like cat5000-sup3.5-5-20.bin . Can you ping your tftp server ok from the switch ?

Seeing you are a Sup III use the copy tftp bootflash: command I'll guarantee that this will work if you have the TFTP end set up correctly , I've done a 100 of these things without a problem .

Version 5.5.20 seems to be a stable version , we have been using it for a while now without a problem even on a switch with a RSM and mls capability .

Check the permissions on the file on your TFTP server.

Check that the filename doesn't have a letter O in the place of one of the zeros. (Stranger things have happened.)

I think you need the .bin, but check there are no invisible embedded spaces.

Upload your current image to your TFTP server, rename it slightly, and see if you can download it again to flash.

Can't see any problem with this upgrade from the release notes.

In attempting to download the OS i've been using the command 'download . The file name has been copied so there isn't any chance of it being incorrect. I've also tried the command 'copy tftp flash' command, but I never tried copying it to bootflash, I'll try that tonight. As for deleting the old file from flash, the documentation states that for this switch the old files are automatically deleted.

Can someone confirm that this switch works in the same way as other Cisco equipment, i.e. it's ok to work on deleting and transfering files in flash while the switch is up and running, and that changes will only take effect when the switch is rebooted.

Cheers

The procedure seems to be different for the IIG and IIIg from the III. On the IIG and IIIG you use the download command, for reasons I shall explain below. For the III you use "copy tftp flash". The procedures can be found in http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat5000/rel_6_2/_config/images.htm#xtocid76265

I have a couple of 5509s with SIIIG that I have updated several times without problems. The procedure is a bit different to other devices though, and I dont think that "copy tftp flash" will work. If you look at the "show flash", you will see that the download procedure decompresses the (archive) file and splits it up into lots of small chunks.

But I think you are a III, so you have to use the "copy" command. Have a look at the document referenced above.

Thanks for your response Kevin.

I have a IIIG card. I've tried the download command, the copy to flash command, the copy to bootflash command. I've tried copying the file to another PC which worked fine and I've tried another TFTP server and I've tried downloading to the switch from another PC. Nothing works, I just get the message that no file exists. The only commonality is the 5509 switch series. I've also tried downloading from a 5509 running 5-2(4) and one running 6-4(3), so not even the OS's are the same.

I've even tried serialing the file but the switch still dosen't see it. By the way the file is the right file and has been downloaded three times just to ensure there isnt a problem with it.

Beats me!

If you have a IIIG, then you are trying to download the wrong image file. cat5000-sup3.5-5-20 is for a III. What you want is cat5000-supg.5-5-20.bin. See

Thanks for that Kevin. The file selection was made by the Cisco software analyzer. I ran the selection proces twice and it came up with the same software each tine. It's just been confirmed that we're upgrading the LAN switches now so I wont need to upgrade the software now.

Thanks for your time.
