Please, read this:

A VIP without a PA is not a supported hardware configuration; such a configuration is useless. Moreover, it can heavily impact the stability of the router. VIPs inserted without PAs can start crashing continuously, heavily disrupting the communication between the Route/Switch Processor (RSP) and the other VIPs.

A typical side-effect of these disruptions are VIPs, known to be working fine, that start showing

"VIP Controller Memory Size: Unknown."

The RSP might not be able to recover from this situation. A reload, after removing the VIP causing the disruption, normally fixes the problem.

Other reasons for this message can be:

- The VIP or the PA installed is not supported by the Cisco IOS software that is running.

- There is no memory installed in the VIP.

- There is not enough memory in the VIP to boot its microcode.

Two things can cantribute to 'VIP Controller Memory Size: Unknown ' on VIP cards :

1 - there is no PA installed on it, or;

2 - the PA used is not supported by IOS ( common case )

Be sure that the IOS has support for the PA installed on the VIP card.
